El mar o la mar català

El mar o la mar català

ambiguous nouns.

In the poem «Canción a un pirata» José de Espronceda uses «el mar» and «la mar.» A student asked me why the feminine and masculine are used. I can’t find anywhere reasons other than «el mar» is normally used but in literature many times it is said «la mar»…and…. in other «expressions» as well…but there is no explanation of when the feminine form is used on other occasions nor what the «expressions» are (I know «la alta mar»).

Now I understand. The high seas is used as in English, a man talks about his boat or car or favorite anything as «her» or «she.» It is the same with people like fishermen and sailors. Thank you very much for your help. I appreciate it very much.

when using la mar

In Tino’s example, «el arma» becomes «la mejor arma», because we have the adjective in the middle, which allows us to use the feminine article. All these nouns are, in fact, of FEMININE gender. This transformation occurs only with words that begin with a / ha tonic. This means that it is not necessary for the accent to be orthographic. Therefore, the same does not happen with such words as «amor»:

It is not that «agua» changes gender when it becomes plural. Agua is feminine, but it takes the article «el» because it begins with an accented a and to say «la agua» is a cacophony, the plural regains the feminine article «las aguas». The same thing happens with the word «arma».

Here, then, I’ll end up talking about how we take on this political action that we can call a radical narrative change (understanding radical as going beyond things) to generate other narrativities from the museums, and that these are spaces of mediation.

However, at the beginning, we made a mistake that would later help us to understand even more all the implications of Dona’m la mar, not only as a punctual research around women who live from the sea, but also for what it means to bring out an invisible narrative in the framework of an institution that generates knowledge such as a museum.

On Thursday, June 7, 2018 at 17.00 h., the second round table of the project Dona’m la mar took place at the Maritime Museum of Barcelona, with the participation of women who have sailed the seas carrying tourists in all kinds of boats. As captains or as part of the crew.

On July 5, 2018 at 17.00 h. the third round table of the project Dona’m la mar took place at the Maritime Museum of Barcelona under the title Una altra forma de mirar el mar: donate’m la mar: scientific and sea women, and starred by women who have made scientific expeditions in seas around the world.
